CHAPTER 21
The following week, Nora stood beside Alice as the Queen handed out more food and supplies provided by the United Kingdom. The event went well, though Nora still didnât like how close Alice was getting to the people. Alex had stayed behind, which made Nora feel a little bit better. The rumors that Alice and Alex were more than just friends had bothered her more than Nora cared to admit. Mr. Daughtry and his politician friends, on the other hand, wanted to play up the rumors â at least, for now. They thought it would help their cause if people thought the Queen was falling in love with a Princess who would one day inherit the most powerful constitutional monarchy in the world. Alice had said no. She wouldnât use Alex like that.
When they were out of the items theyâd brought, Alice said her goodbyes to the still-growing crowd, and they made their way back to the palace, which finally had power in all the rooms and a working kitchen. Things were changing little by little, and once the Queen had been deposited in her room, Nora decided to try to take some of it in. She drove around the city without intention. There seemed to be more people on the streets than usual. Some were even smiling. Businesses appeared busier. Parks that had been closed for years had kids with their parents in them. The city was coming to life. Nora continued her drive until she made her way outside the city to the tiny town where her grandmother still lived.
âNora? What are you doing here?â the old woman asked when Nora walked right into the tiny house using her key.
âI wanted to check on you.â
âOh, Iâm fine.â She smiled at her granddaughter and stood to give Nora a kiss on her cheek.
Noraâs grandma was her motherâs mom. Thanks to some clever name-changing and moving around a lot several years ago, sheâd been relatively protected from the government. Nora hadnât told anyone her grandmother was still alive, and the older Nora got, people stopped asking about her family. Femke didnât even know that the woman was still around. Nora had tried to get her grandma out of the country after her grandfather had passed away years ago, but she was a stubborn old lady who didnât want to give up the life she had here, which wasnât much. The house was paid for, but it only had one small bedroom with a tiny bathroom and an eat-in kitchen with only a two-burner stove top and a small fridge. It was in a town that most people forgot about, and the house sat several kilometers away from the main road.
âI brought you some food,â Nora said, holding up a few grocery bags.
âI may be old, but Iâm perfectly capable of getting my own groceries, Nora.â
âI know that, but I was on my way here and thought Iâd save you the trip,â Nora replied, moving to the small kitchen to put away the items.
